The World Has Changed — Its Time To Change How We Work Too
I don’t need to tell you that 2020 has given us more challenges than we could have ever imagined. There are endless articles talking about how to inspire change, how to take a stand, and how to evolve your self-care. What they fail to mention is how we resume our “normal” workload and schedule. How do we continue working at the same pace when things clearly are not the same?
The first thing we can do is redefine productivity. But how do we do that and what exactly does that even mean?
For me, redefining productivity moving forward looks like taking action on the things that matter most to me. In other words, being essential with my productivity and being clear on my priorities. Gone are the days of giving 110% effort to everything. As I create a clear vision of what I want my company to look like 1, 5, 10 years from now, I’m prioritizing putting my effort towards the activities and goals that will get me and my team closer to that.
One thing I’ve experienced this year is that our work expands to fit the space available (collateral damage of the flexibility of technology and working from home). This time has helped me realize that while I do want my work to expand, I want it to expand in certain ways, so being clear on my vision and what my productive efforts are causing is a lesson I’ve relearned this year.
In terms of my day to day? This realization is helping me to empower my team in their roles and delegate more responsibilities. The biggest shift, however, has been to make time for creative brainstorming on a weekly basis — and recognize this as equally (and perhaps more) productive!
How can you reinvent your perspective in order to keep your goals on track?
Take a closer look at how you can redefine your work and productivity with these prompts:
- How do you define success? We each get to set this definition for ourselves. I define success by measuring if my goals were accomplished while remaining true to my boundaries.
- What do you value and how can you bring those values into your work schedule and productivity expectations?
- Do you need to reexamine your work hours? Can you set clear start and stop times for your day?
- Try prioritizing your daily and weekly tasks by urgency, importance, or both.
- Can you examine how and why you believe certain things to be productive (and others not)? Take into account how even the small things can have a positive impact on your work. For example, when I taking time to catch up with a friend, while I’m not being productive on my to do list, I may have a lightbulb moment that sparks inspiration for my business.
The way we work and be productive changes over time. 2020 has definitely proved that in every sense. So take a moment to reflect on how you want to work and how your work can best work for you.
